Why This Comparison Matters
Yoast SEO has been the default WordPress SEO plugin for over a decade. It has 5 million+ active installations and most beginner tutorials still recommend it. Who Should Still Use Yoast?
Despite losing this comparison, there are real scenarios where Yoast remains the better choice:
- Editorial teams writing lots of content — Yoast's readability analysis is genuinely better and helps maintain consistent quality across multiple writers
- Sites already deeply configured on Yoast — Migration is easy but there's always risk. If your site is performing well on Yoast, the upgrade/switch isn't worth the disruption
- Serious WooCommerce stores — The dedicated Yoast WooCommerce SEO plugin is best-in-class for complex product catalogues
- Clients or teams unfamiliar with SEO — Yoast's simpler traffic light system is more accessible for non-SEO users
Final Verdict
For new sites or sites willing to migrate: install RankMath. The free version is more powerful than Yoast Premium, it's faster, and the schema implementation is significantly better. I've switched every client site I manage and the migration takes about 15 minutes using RankMath's built-in Yoast importer.
For established sites on Yoast that are performing well: stay on Yoast. Both plugins are excellent. The performance difference won't justify a migration risk if your SEO is already working.
